About Our Telehealth Program

Mental Health Care Without the Barriers

For many people in Southern West Virginia, getting to a therapist means long drives on winding mountain roads, time off work, and arranging childcare. Telehealth changes that. Whether you connect from your living room or walk into one of our clinics, you get the same licensed providers, the same evidence-based treatment, and the same personalized care — without the barriers that keep people from getting help.

Southern Highlands has been serving Mercer, McDowell, and Wyoming counties since 1968. Our telehealth program extends that commitment by meeting you where you are — literally. As a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC), every telehealth session meets the same rigorous quality standards as our in-person care.

We offer two distinct telehealth options because one size doesn't fit all. If you have reliable internet, connect from home. If you don't — or if you prefer in-person support — come to any of our six locations and we'll set everything up for you.

Quick Answer: What is Telehealth?

Telehealth lets you meet with your therapist, psychiatrist, or prescriber through a secure video call — just like FaceTime or Zoom, but HIPAA-encrypted and private. You can do it from home on your phone, or come to one of our clinics and use our equipment.

It's the same appointment, same provider, same treatment plan — just without the drive.

Insurance & Medicaid

West Virginia Medicaid, Medicare, and most private insurance plans cover telehealth at the same rate as in-person visits. No extra cost to you.

Two Ways to Connect

Choose the Option That Works for You

Not everyone has reliable internet or a private space at home — that's why we offer both remote and in-clinic telehealth so no one is left without access to care.

Remote Telehealth

Connect from anywhere

Attend your appointment from home, work, or anywhere private using your own device. No travel, no waiting room — just quality care on your schedule.

What you need:

  • Smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera
  • Internet connection or cell service (WiFi or 4G/LTE)
  • A quiet, private space where you can talk freely
  • We send you a secure link — no app download needed

Ideal for patients with reliable internet who prefer the convenience of home.

Schedule a Remote Session

In-Clinic Telehealth

Use our equipment at any location

Come to any SHCMHC location and connect to a specialist using our telehealth equipment.

What you need:

  • Just show up — we provide all equipment and connection
  • A scheduled appointment (call us to set it up)
  • Your insurance card and photo ID
  • Staff support included throughout your entire session

Ideal for patients without reliable internet or who prefer in-person support during their session.

Why It Matters

Breaking Down Barriers in Rural WV

In Southern West Virginia, 30% of residents live more than 30 minutes from a mental health provider. Many roads are narrow, winding, and dangerous in winter. Public transportation is limited. For people managing depression, anxiety, or substance use, these barriers can mean the difference between getting help and going without.

Telehealth eliminates distance as a barrier. It also reduces stigma — some patients feel more comfortable talking to a therapist from the privacy of their own home. And for patients in our more remote communities, in-clinic telehealth connects them to specialists they'd otherwise never have access to.

Our Commitment

  • Same licensed providers you'd see in person
  • HIPAA-encrypted, CCBHC-audited platforms
  • No patient turned away for inability to pay
  • Staff support for in-clinic telehealth sessions
  • Phone-only option when video isn't available
  • Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance accepted

Common Questions

Telehealth FAQs

Have questions about telehealth? Here are the answers to what patients ask most.

Yes. Peer-reviewed research consistently shows that telehealth therapy produces outcomes equivalent to in-person care for depression, anxiety, PTSD, substance use disorders, and most other mental health conditions. The American Psychiatric Association endorses telehealth as a safe and effective modality. Many of our patients prefer telehealth for the privacy and convenience it offers.

That's exactly why we offer in-clinic telehealth. You come to any SHCMHC location, use our equipment and internet, and connect to a specialist remotely — with staff support the entire session. We also offer phone-only sessions when video isn't possible.

Yes. West Virginia Medicaid fully covers telehealth services, and most private insurance plans provide coverage as well. We verify your benefits before your first appointment — just call +1-304-425-9541 and we'll take care of it.

Absolutely. Every session runs on HIPAA-compliant, end-to-end encrypted platforms. Your information is protected by the same federal privacy laws that apply to in-person visits. Our systems are audited regularly as part of our CCBHC certification.

Yes. We offer telehealth for children's outpatient services — individual counseling, psychiatric evaluation, family therapy, and behavioral support. A parent or guardian must be present and provide consent for minors.

A smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer with a camera and microphone. Most sessions work over WiFi or a 4G/LTE cell connection. We send you a secure link before your appointment — no app download required.

Yes. Our psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners conduct medication evaluations and adjustments via telehealth, including follow-up visits for ongoing medication management. Prescriptions are sent electronically to your pharmacy.
