Veterans Mental Health Services

Behavioral health support for veterans, service members, and military-connected adults through Southern Highlands' existing mental health, substance use, crisis, and psychiatric services.

Call To Request Services

Veterans and Military-Connected Adults

A Local Starting Point for Behavioral Health Support

Southern Highlands Community Mental Health Center serves adults across Mercer, McDowell, and Wyoming counties. Veterans and military-connected adults can request care through the same community-based access points used for adult mental health, crisis, substance use, medical provider, and telehealth services.

The goal of this page is to make that path easier to understand. It does not create a separate veterans-only medical program or claim specialized services that have not been confirmed. Instead, it shows how existing SHCMHC services can be matched to concerns veterans may bring to care.

Getting Started

How To Connect With Care

The first step is a conversation about what is happening and what kind of support may fit.

1

Call or Request Services

Call +1-304-425-9541 or use the request form to start a conversation about current concerns, location, and next steps.

2

Complete an Assessment

A clinician reviews current symptoms, history, safety needs, substance use concerns, and treatment goals.

3

Match Services to Need

The care plan may include therapy, crisis support, substance use treatment, psychiatric services, telehealth, or referrals.

4

Continue Coordinated Care

The care team can adjust services over time and help connect practical supports when those needs are part of the plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does SHCMHC provide services for veterans?

Yes. Veterans, service members, and military-connected adults can request SHCMHC services. Care is provided through existing mental health, substance use, crisis, medical provider, telehealth, and care coordination services based on assessment and individual need.

Is this a separate veterans-only medical program?

No. This page explains how veterans can access SHCMHC services that are already available in the community. It does not describe a separate veterans-only medical program or promise services outside SHCMHC scope.

Do I have to use the VA to receive care at SHCMHC?

No. You can contact SHCMHC directly to ask about services, insurance, payment options, and appointment availability. If other community or veteran-serving resources are relevant, staff can discuss options as part of the care planning process.

What should I do if I am in crisis?
